Bio:

The Chikoko Trails Camps are made of two intimate bush camps - Chikoko Tree Camp and Big Lagoon Camp, which are the walking-only satellite camps of Tafika Camp, and run by the same people.

The two tiny, rustic camps are set in the South Luangwa National Park to the west of the Luangwa River in an area set aside solely for walking safaris. Norman Carr the legendary conservationist is widely regarded to have pioneered walking safaris in the 1960s, in the South Luangwa, to provide a more intimate and immersive experience to visitors. In visiting these camps you are transported to how walking safari used to be in the time of Norman Carr and you will find out why it is such a unique experience.

Two walks are enjoyed per day, generally around a four hour morning walk and a shorter afternoon walk, following well-trodden elephant and hippo trails, along with the footsteps of David Livingstone, through the pristine Luangwa Valley. The walks are largely flat, however, it can be uneven underfoot. The focus it is on the minutiae of the bush - animal tracks, insects, bird sounds, seed pods - everything you normally miss from the relatively detached perspective of a safari vehicle.

Both camps are basic but comfortable and safe. You are truly immersed in the bush here, but still have  your own private bathrooms with hot water (!), even hotter hospitality, expert guides and great food.

Have a look at our 10-night Wild Zambia Safari Holiday for an idea of a truly off-the-beaten-track trip including a stay at the Chikoko Trails Camps.
