Bio:
Lake Natron Camp is not too far off Northern Tanzania's well-trodden safari circuit, but it is not on most people's radars and offers a more authentic and exclusive experience. The variety of activities available here, as well as the diversity of landscapes to explore are also different to anything you will find in the likes of Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti.
Most commonly accessed during a privately guided driven safari through Tanzania, Lake Natron Camp is located on the shores of Lake Natron itself and in the shadow of the nearly 3,000m high peak of Ol Doinyo Lengai. It is a stunning, raw, atmospheric location. It is also possible to access the camp by air, flying into the local airstrip or on foot as part of a trek with Leonotis Adventures, which uses the camp as the end of their Great Rift Valley trek, or the start of the Footsteps of Mankind trek.
The activities at Lake Natron Camp focus not on trying to find wildlife by vehicle, as you are not in prime safari area, but instead on; walking, Lake Natron itself and its flamingoes, relaxing, Maasai culture and the history of the region. There are animals around, however, you are unlikely to see cats or anything much bigger.
On your doorstep there are also well-preserved human footprints left in the mud between 5,000 and 19,000 years ago, up to 2.5 million flamingoes (between November and April), waterfalls, a natural pool, mountain biking trails and some stunning sundowner spots.
It is this change of pace from the normal twice daily game drives of most of the other safari areas in Tanzania that makes Lake Natron Camp such a worthwhile addition to any itinerary.
