Bio:

The North Luangwa National Park feels like a world away from parts of the South Luangwa, its more famous sibling. Home to just a few camps and very few roads, for guests who do make it here they will have 4,636 square kilometres of wilderness to explore.

Mwaleshi Camp has a stunning location, much like its sister camps Tafika Camp and the Chikoko Trails Camps, tucked away within a scenic bend of the Mwaleshi River. Each year, following the rains the camp is rebuilt using reeds, poles and thatch. Each of the four chalets are largely open, making the most of the views of the river.

The experience here focusses on exploring the North Luangwa on foot and it is not an area where you are going to be walking on regular paths or likely to be interrupted by vehicles or in fact any other people at all. We'd recommend at least three nights to really settle into the rhythm of this camp and also to enjoy a nights 'sleep out' on a remote riverbank.

While the wildlife is largely similar to the South Luangwa, due to rampant poaching in the 1980s the elephants are generally more scarce and skittish. The differing geography, most notably the Muchinga escarpment also impacts the prevalence and sightings of sable antelope, bush pugs and blue monkeys. Lion and buffalo populations are very strong and the park also has a small population of black rhino after reintroduction efforts that started back in 2003.
