Bio:
Namibia's Zambezi Region is a thin finger of land which connects Namibia to Zambia and Zimbabwe and is bordered by Botswana and Angola. It isn't necessarily where you might expect to find an Italian family running safari lodges. However, after a family vacation visiting Namibia, the three Micheletti brothers Simone, Alessandro and Ruggero made their way back with a view to develop the tourism and service levels in the country. In 2011 they opened Nkasa Lupala Tented Lodge and it has become one of the best lodges in the region.
The Nkasa Rupara National Park (the Micheletti's thought the park was going to be called Nkasa Lupala, only to find discover in the local accent L's and R's sound very similar) has had a chequered past, once beleaguered by poaching it has bounced back dramatically during the last ten years. In the dry season especially (July-October) it promises great wildlife viewing, including elephants, buffalo, lions, leopard and even wild dog. In the wet season as the largest wetland habitat in Namibia it is fantastic for migratory birds, as many as 430 species have been recorded here.
The lodge's 10 rooms are tented in style, raised on stilts, all with fantastic views of the surrounding area. They are comfortable but not over the top and the whole camp is supplied by electricity and water through the use of solar panels making it completely self-sufficient.
Activities include game drives both at day and night, walking safaris, boat trips, village visits and there is even a spa. A boat trip on the Linyanti River is not to be missed. Just a stones throw from some of the most expensive lodges in Botswana this area is a real hidden gem.
