Bio:
Since its establishment in 1986 as a small 'guest-farm' the Okonjima Nature Reserve has grown considerable and today it is home to essentially four different accommodation options. The Plains Camp is the entry level option, followed by the Luxury Bush Camp and then the all-inclusive African Villa and Private Suite. The activities between each are very similar and we find that the Plains Camp suits many travellers on a self-drive around Namibia, however it is the largest and the busiest, as well as being popular with families. If you are looking for something a little more sedate and exclusive opt one of the others.
Okonjima's location halfway between Etosha National Park and the Namibia's capital of Windhoek makes it a popular destination to start or finish a trip around Namibia. The vast reserve offers a good general safari experience, but the focus tends to be on certain species which are the focus of conservation efforts by the AfriCat Foundation, including leopard, pangolin, aardvark and brown hyena. To aid research efforts focussing on these enigmatic species some individuals have been fitted with radio-collars. They live a completely wild existence just their movements and behaviour patterns are monitored.
Okonjima Plains Camp itself offers spacious rooms in two categories - classic rooms and view rooms. They offer a very similar experience in single storey, boxy chalets with large windows offering views of the savannah. The view rooms are bigger and newer, as such they are a bit smarter. The 24 rooms fan out either side of a large central area, which is complete with a watering hole, swimming pool and lovely outside seating area.
As it is only 3.5 hours from Windhoek's International Airport, a stay on the Okonjima Reserve works well as the final night on your trip to avoid an overnight in the capital, but still with enough time to get to your afternoon flight on time.
