Bio:
Sharing a somewhat porous eastern boundary with Etosha National Park is the 34,000ha Onguma Nature Reserve, currently making a name for itself in the safari industry with its luxury accommodations and range of activities.
Onguma Bush Camp is one of the more modest lodging options on the Onguma Reserve, which is also home to the uber-lux Onguma Camp Kala, the almost Moroccan-looking Onguma the Fort and our favourite option, Onguma Tented Camp.
What we especially like about a stay at any of these lodges (and even at the campsites on the reserve) is the chance to enjoy the activities available on the reserve. While they have the 'normal' safari activities of night and day game drives and bush walks, they also have an incredible 'Dreamcruiser' sleep-out experience, a photographic hide, rejuvenating spa and the ability to organise private bush breakfasts and dinners.
Back in camp, the focus of Onguma Bush Camp is the spacious central area and pool which overlooks a large waterhole. While the camp is contained within an electric fence, making it suitable for families, the waterhole is not fenced so anything may stop by (and does!), it is always worth keeping half an eye on the waterhole. Our favourite rooms are the waterhole rooms for this same reason. For families the loft rooms are good fun, as a mezzanine level accessed by a ladder forms the room for up to two small children.
Faran recommends including a stop in this area of Eastern Etosha in combination with a stay in the central Okaukuejo region, or perhaps before you head east into the wild Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Region).
