Bio:
Tafika Camp is one of our stand out options for a safari in the South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.
Firstly, it has a fantastic location in a national park that can be quite busy in some areas. Secondly, in an industry that commonly seems to prioritise luxurious fixtures and fittings over the safari experience, it offers a truly authentic experience led by the heritage of the family that built the camp and still call it home to this day.
While the camp has gradually evolved and progressed since its inception the character and soul of the camp has thankfully remained the same. John and Carol Coppinger settled here 1995 with safari guide Bryan Jackson and still the camp is managed by John and Carol's daughter Jenny and her husband Nick.
You will find Tafika just a few minutes outside of the exclusive Nsefu Sector in the north of the South Luangwa National Park. Home to just a few other camps and highly seasonal the Nsefu Sector is probably of our favourite part of the South Luangwa and if you can, everyone should include some time here on their trip to Zambia.
The camp is essentially rebuilt after the rains each year and on polished stone floors, reeds, thatch and gum poles are used to contrast spacious, largely open rooms. They have large open apertures to the front facing the river and outside bathrooms to the rear, although being so open to the elements might be disconcerting initially, once you are settled in bed under a large mosquito net you have nothing to worry about.
Tafika has a homely communal dining area and lounge, a WiFi tree with a few seats and a great hide at the edge of camp, which is popular with local wildlife as the dry season progresses.
Along with day and night game drives, Tafika has the camp wildlife hide and a seasonal carmine bee-eater hide available in September and October as well as walking safaris and mountain bike safaris for those feeling energetic.
